On one occasion, my mother forced me to go on an evangelical spiritual retreat, one of the strangest experiences of my life. There I saw a young man being subjected to a kind of exorcism-transformation where they tried to convince him that he should be ashamed of being gay and that he should change, and that he should surrender his will to God to do so. Obviously, no one has to feel ashamed of being what they are, and no religion or group has the right to change anyone's ways. These three photographs are the result of that experience. "The importance of giving up" is a phrase used in Alcoholics Anonymous groups to teach how we should surrender our will, leaving our lives in God's hands in order to change.
